GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
Named for the river it occupies, the Ayeyarwady Regaion is bordered by Bago Region to the north, Bago Region and Yangon Region to the east. The Region’s climate is tropical with seasonal monsoons.
KEY FACTS
- The Ayeyarwady Region is home to the second largest population across Myanmar.
- The colourful handmade parasols (Pathein Hti) are widely known throughout Burma.
- Ayeyarwady Region has been the centre of the country’s rice production for over a century but underdeveloped transport and storage infrastructure has affected its position.
- The region currently faces challenges with capacity development and infrastructure for clean drinking water, and better education and healthcare.
- Chaungtha Beach and Ngwesaung Beach are popular tourist destinations located at the west side of the region, an hour’s drive from Pathein City.
